UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - With the women's tennis spring season approaching, the Spiders have been tabbed to win their fourth-straight A-10 title, in voting conducting among Atlantic 10 head coaches as announced Tuesday by the conference.
"We expect this year's championship to be the toughest yet," stated Richmond head women's tennis coach Mark Wesselink. "Massachusetts and Charlotte both return solid teams and Temple is stronger too. Also, Xavier and St Louis can't be counted out."
The women's tennis team, led by 17th-year head coach Wesselink, captured its third straight Atlantic 10 title and its fourth in the past five years last year. The Spiders advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in the last nine years, wrapping up a season in which it finished with a flourish, winning nine of its last ten regular season matches and sweeping the A-10 Championship without allowing a point.
Individual Spiders swept A-10 honors as they led their squad to the championship, with Robin Carter, Beatrice Grasu and Pamela Duran being named to the A-10 All-Conference team. Duran was also named the A-10's Most Outstanding Rookie, while Wesselink was tabbed the Coach of the Year for the fourth time in five years of league play.
"We expect to have a big bull's-eye on us after winning the last three years and we are taking nothing for granted," continued Wesselink. "Our team knows we have to work harder this year and they welcome the challenge."
The Spiders will open the 2007 spring season on January 20-21 in Williamsburg, Va. at the William & Mary Kick-Off Tournament.
