UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior Caitlin Geary and freshman Alex Helland were awarded Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving weekly honors, conference officials announced Monday. Geary was named the league's Co-Performer of the week along side Saint Louis' Elena Ramirez, while Helland earned her first career Rookie of the Week honor.
Geary broke the Richmond record in the 1,650 free with an NCAA b-cut time of 16:48.70 against Maryland, Pittsburgh and Villanova in College Park, Md., this past weekend. Her mark in the mile was also tops in the Atlantic 10 this season. The Andover, Mass., native logged a 4:29.01 in the 400 IM to take home fourth place and went 4:58.67 in the 500 free for a third-place finish. She recorded a seventh-place mark in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.84 and also took part in two relays (200 free and 400 free) during the four-team duel.
Helland helped the Spiders to a third-place mark, as well as a top time in the Atlantic 10, in the 200 medley relay (1:46.51). She went on to place fifth in the 100 back with a 57.78, topping her previous best of 57.94. The Southlake, Texas, native led off for the Spiders in the 400 medley relay and helped log the fastest time of the season in the Atlantic 10 (3:51.75). Her leadoff leg time of 57.58 again marked a season best in the 100 back, placing her name fifth all-time at Richmond. She turned in a fourth-place mark of 2:06.69 in the 200 back and swam in both the 200 free and 400 free relay competitions for the Spiders.
