UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Despite holding a 12-point lead over halfway through the second half, Richmond dropped a heartbreaking 72-69 overtime decision to St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon in the Robins Center. Freshman Katie Holzer recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds and Christina Campion chipped in 14 points to lead the Spiders' efforts in their third overtime game of the season.
While Holzer recorded her second double-double of the season and seventh double-digit performance of the season Campion's 14 points marked her 50th career double-digit performance. Nikita Thomas, who the Spiders were without in the final five minutes of regulation and overtime, fouled out with 11 points and seven rebounds and teammate Johanna McKnight also chipped in 10 points for her fourth consecutive double-digit performance.
Also contributing points for the Spiders were Sarah Williams, who shot a perfect 4-4 from the foul line, and DeUnna Hendrix with five points.
"I thought we played well in the beginning of the game, but then we went flat in the last 12 minutes," stated Richmond head coach Michael Shafer. "At that point, we let St. Bonaventure back into the game. Our kids played with effort and played hard, but we need to play with a greater intent and purpose. They need to use their energy better."
Thomas put in three of the Spiders' first four baskets to lead them on a 9-0 run in the first three minutes of play. Despite a slow start, the Bonnies sparked into action with a 17-7 run and 10 minutes later, at the 7:16 mark, they had stolen the lead. The teams battled back and forth over the next few minutes and although the Spiders found themselves down by four at the 4:31 mark, they were able to dig themselves out of the hole and pull ahead; however the Bonnies put in the final baskets of the half for a two-point advantage (29-27) at the break.
Just over four minutes into the second half, Powell hit her third 3-pointer of the afternoon to give the Spiders a lead, which they kept for the next 12:50 of play. Using a combination of fast-break lay-ups, jumpers and free throws from McKnight and Holzer, Richmond built its largest lead (12) of the game at the 7:18 mark, before the Bonnies would make their second comeback of the game.
Erica Schieffen, who finished with 12 points for St. Bonaventure, chipped in 10 points in the Bonnies' 16-2 run, as they stole the lead with just 3:07 after trailing for almost 13 minutes. The final minutes of play went back and forth, still tied up coming down to the final ten seconds. Just as Holzer put in a lay-up for the Spiders with nine seconds to go, Priscilla Edwards was able to sneak through the Spider defense with just three seconds on the clock to send the game into overtime for the second year in a row.
Although McKnight went 4-4 in the overtime period, and Campion and Hendrix were able to chip in baskets, Audrey Latendresse put in five of the Bonnies last seven points as they finished with a three point advantage over the Spiders, earning their first conference win and second-straight overtime win over the Spiders.
St. Bonaventure (11-8, 1-3) concluded the afternoon with five players in double figures, led by Priscilla Edwards with a game-high 15 points off 5-of-5 shooting from the free throw line. Latendresse followed with 14 points, while Dana Mitchell, Schieffen and Andrea Doneth each chipped in 12 points apiece.
"It's disappointing to lose a game like this at home," stated Shafer. "I thought we were moving in the right direction; I think we just hit a speed bump."
The Spiders (8-12, 2-3) will continue A-10 action with a road trip up north to face La Salle and Fordham. Richmond will face the Explorers on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and the Rams on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Live coverage for all of the Spiders' contests will be available at RichmondSpiders.com.
