PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Richmond men's basketball team made more field goals than La Salle, but the Explorers scored 37 points from the free throw line in a 79-56 loss Wednesday night in Tom Gola Arena.
The Spiders had their poorest shooting game of the season, connecting on just 32.8 percent from the floor, but made 19 field goals, compared to 18 for La Salle. The Explorers made 37-of-47 free throws, while Richmond connected on 11-of-17. La Salle out-rebounded the Spiders 54-25.
"They killed us on the boards and went to the line almost triple the amount of times we did, that's a difficult hole to climb out of," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "Give La Salle credit, they played with aggression."
Richmond freshman Dan Geriot led the Spiders in scoring for the eight time this season with 12 points. Red-shirt freshman Ryan Butler and freshman David Gonzalvez each scored 11.
Darnell Harris scored 18 points and Rodney Green added 15 for the Explorers (9-11, 2-4). Sherman Diaz contributed 12 points and Ruben Guillandeaux added 10 for La Salle.
Richmond trailed by eight at the half (25-17) and only trailed by seven at 45-38 with 10:09 to play, but the Explorers went on a 12-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Harris to lead 57-42 with 5:59 left. Richmond never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.
"We have to come out right away and have fight," Richmond senior Peter Thomas said. "We're getting down and then realizing that we have to fight. We can't do that."
Richmond returns to action on Saturday when the Spiders host St. Bonaventure at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center. The 2007 University of Richmond Athletic Hall of Fame inductees will be honored at halftime and proceeds from every ticket sold go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
