Thompson And Weidner Finish Off La Salle In Overtime

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Megan Thompson took the ball on the right wing 25 yards out and literally zigzagged through four defenders, flicking a shot past the keeper that sophomore Jess Weidner tapped across the line to give the Richmond field hockey team a 1-0 overtime victory over La Salle on Sunday.
"I knew when I had it that I just needed to get in the circle and try to get a result," Thompson said. "I tried to flick it in, it went over (the keeper's) leg and luckily Jess was there to pick it up. It was just a great, great finish. We really needed it."
Richmond has now won 45 of its last 46 matches against Atlantic 10 opponents since 2001, its inaugural season in the conference when the Spiders finished 2-4 in league play. Richmond is in a four-way tie for first place in the Atlantic with a 3-1 record as the Spiders look for their sixth-straight conference regular season and tournament titles.
The Spiders, who had their Atlantic 10 winning streak snapped at 44 games in Friday's loss to West Chester, came out strong Sunday, but the game went into overtime scoreless. Thompson took the ball about 25 yards out and zigzagged her way past four La Salle defenders as she made a beeline for the near post. With one defender and the goalie remaining in her path, Thompson tried to flip the ball to the right of the keeper and that is when Weidner snuck in and finished the play off."
The goal was Weidner's second of her career and the second in as many games.
Richmond goalkeeper's Jacki Raithel and Becca Weaver combined on the shutout. Raithel played solidly in the first half, clearing a few balls without having to make a save. Weaver made six saves in the second half.
"Jacki and Becca were excellent in goal today," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "They've both been doing very well for us."
The Spiders hit the road next weekend to play at Rhode Island on Friday and at Massachusetts on Sunday.
