AMHERST, Va. - Junior Tim Courtney posted his best-career finish, tying for fifth to lead the Richmond men's golf team to a runner-up finish at the Frank Landry Invitational, played Monday and Tuesday at Poplar Grove Golf Club.
The Spiders were one shot off the lead entering the final round, but even shooting a 4-over 292 on Tuesday was not enough as Radford carded a 5-under-par 283 in Tuesday's round to win by 10 strokes.
"It's good to be in the hunt for a title," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "The guys played well and it was a good learning experience on the last day. We've just got to keep giving ourselves those opportunities."
The Spiders had four of their players place in the top-20, led by Courtney finishing fifth at even-par 216. Courtney shot a 3-under 69 in the first round, a 76 in the second round and a 1-under 71 in the final round on the par-72, 7,059-yard course. Courtney now has three-career top-10 finishes.
Sophomore Robert Lindstrom finished the tournament at 1-over 217 to tie for sixth. Lindstrom shot an even-par 72 and a 1-under-par 71 in the first two rounds and carded a 2-over 74 on Tuesday.
Senior Jordan Utley tied for 10th at 5-over 221. Utley shot a 2-under-par 70 in the opening round and followed that with a 76 in the second round and a 75 on Tuesday. Sophomore Hunter Townsend tied for 17th at 7-over 223. Townsend rebounded from an opening round 80 to shoot 1-under 71 in the second round and even-par in the final round. Senior Lawrence Lessing finished four strokes behind Townsend in a tie for 28th at 227. Lessing shot 74-75-78 in the three rounds.
The Spiders return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational at Members Club at Four Streams in Bellsville, Md.
Junior Grant Rafield tied for 48th competing as an individual. He shot rounds of 79, 74 and 82.
