KINGSTON, R.I. - Four different players scored as the Richmond field hockey team defeated Rhode Island 4-0 on Friday at the URI Field Hockey Complex.
Junior Sarah Schrott put the Spiders on the board 13:50 into the game, the first of three Richmond goals in a less than six minutes that had the Spiders up 3-0 less than 20 minutes into the game.
"The team came out in the first half with solid attacking presence," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "It was great to have four different contributors on our finishing end. I think the girls handled the surface change to grass well. Our consistency and focus in play is developing. That is promising."
Richmond won for the fourth time in the last five games, improving to 4-1 in the Atlantic 10 and having now won 46 of the last 47 games against A-10 opponents.
The Spiders have a showdown with Massachusetts (4-1 Atlantic 10) on Sunday at 2 p.m. The five-time defending Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament champions are in a three-way tie for first with UMass and Temple, who the Spiders defeated 2-1 on Oct. 5.
Schrott scored the first goal of the game on an assist by senior Erin Arthur on a penalty corner. The Spiders' second goal also came on a penalty corner, when red-shirt freshman Dani Pycroft got an assist on sophomore Sarah Blythe-Wood's team-leading sixth goal of the season. Just three minutes later - and 19 minutes into the match - junior Alex Malatesta scored her fourth goal of the season to make it 3-0.
Sophomore Annie Edwards made it 4-0 with 1:13 remaining when she tipped in a blast from Arthur.
Junior goalkeeper Becca Weaver and sophomore keeper Jacki Raithel combined on the shutout, splitting the game. Weaver made two saves in the first half and Raithel made five saves in the second half.
