ARLINGTON, Va. -
The Spider women's soccer team scored early in each half, building a 2-0 lead, then held off a late George Washington rally to beat the Colonials, 3-2 Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 match at Mount Vernon Field.
Richmond (4-9-2, 3-3-1 A-10) scored less than five minutes into the match on an 18-yard strike from the right side by redshirt junior Melanie Varga - her first goal of the season. Varga assisted on sophomore Jen Ruhe's third goal of the season, from 15 yards away at the 49:19 mark to give the Spiders a 2-0 advantage.
GW (6-8-0, 1-6-0) sliced the lead in half on a goal by freshman Cynthia Gamboa in the 63rd minute. But the visitors countered less than two minutes later, using a penalty kick goal from junior , her first of the year, to build the lead to 3-1. Colonial sophomore Emily Gower scored with less than four minutes remaining, but the Spiders were able run out the clock.
Spider goalkeeper Kate Hudson recorded five saves on nine shots in helping Richmond defeat GW for the first time 2002, a span of four matches.
Richmond travels to Longwood for a non-conference match Sunday evening at 7 o'clock, then returns to First Market Stadium for Atlantic 10 action Friday (5 p.m.) against Saint Joseph's and Sunday (noon) against Temple.
