BEALLSVILLE, Md. - Sophomore Hunter Townsend shot a career-low round of 66 in the second round, tying the course record at the Members Club at Four Streams and moving himself and the Spiders both into third place after two rounds of the Georgetown Hoya Invitational.
Along with Townsend, three other Spiders shot even-par 71s in the second round, giving Richmond the third-lowest team round in school history at 5-under 279. A 293 in the morning round has the Spiders at 4-over 572.
"We played decently in the morning, but we really put it together in the afternoon," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Obviously it's great any time you have four players at even par or better. Now we need to put together another solid round tomorrow."
Richmond is three strokes behind second-place St. John's (569), with a 16-stroke cushion on defending champion Georgetown (588), which is in fourth place. De Paul leads the tournament at 5-under 563, nine strokes ahead of the Spiders heading into Tuesday's final round.
Townsend shot a 4-over-par 75 in the opening round and followed that up with a 5-under-par 66 in the second round to finish the day at 1-under 141. Townsend's 66 ties for the second lowest score in Spider golf history and his round at 5-under par ties for third for the lowest score to par in school history. It was the lowest round of the day and one of just seven rounds under 70.
"Hunter really played unbelievable today," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He really had everything working for him, he was hitting it well off the tee, hitting his irons well and making putts."
Senior Jordan Utley is tied for fifth after shooting a pair of even-par 71s to sit at 142. Sophomore Robert Lindstrom is tied for 14th at 2-over 144 after shooting a 73 in the morning and 71 in the afternoon. Junior Tim Courtney is tied for 16th at 3-over 145 after a 74 in the first round and a 71 in the second round.
Senior Lawrence Lessing is tied for 42nd at 154 after rounds of 75 and 79.
