Quick Slants:
No. 14 Richmond rolls into sold-out Bridgeforth Stadium on No. 6 James Madison's Homecoming Weekend. The Spiders have won two of their last three trips to Harrisonburg, including an 18-15 win in 2005.
Last Saturday marked the 100th game of Dave Clawson's nine-year head coaching career. His career mark now stands at 52-48 (23-19 at UR).
Saturday's pivotal CAA South game is a match-up of the two best rushing teams in the league, two of the CAA's four best scoring teams and two of the league's best defenses.
Senior Tim Hightower, a Walter Payton Award candidate, is the nation's fourth-leading rusher this season, averaging 157.0 yards/game. But last week the tailback was the game's leading receiver. He caught a TD pass to extend his streak of games with a TD to eight.
Freshmen LB Eric McBride and DL Adam Abramowitz were the Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, in the CAA this week. Richmond has won a league-leading seven weekly awards this season.
McBride (16 tackles) and Abramowitz (10 tackles, 4 TFL) led a defense that kept Rhode Island out of the end zone and limited one of the CAA's leading rushing attacks to just 166 yards on the ground.
Derek Hatcher and Justin Rogers rank among the NCAA's best punt and kick return tandems.
Decimated by injuries, the Spiders played most of the Rhode Island game without seven starters from the season-opener.
Up Next:
Richmond is back home to host Villanova on its Homecoming next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
