UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Not even a game-long downpour could dampen Senior Night. Senior Carrie Holland scored twice with an assist and senior Anne Hazel scored once, leading the Richmond women's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Saint Joseph's at First Market Stadium Friday.
Richmond's four graduating seniors - Holland, Hazel, Christine Wrublesky and Ali LeVIne - were honored in a pre-match ceremony. And Holland wasted little time making her mark. The senior struck for the first goal just 39 seconds into the match as she scored on a rebound in front of the SJU net.
The win lifted the surging Spiders to 4-3-1 in the Atlantic 10, keeping Richmond (5-10-2 overall) in striking distance of the team's first A-10 Championship berth since the current seniors were freshmen.
Holland provided the assist on Hazel's goal in the 37th minute and Holland netted an insurance goal for the Spiders in the game's closing minutes. She rained a game-high six shots on the SJU defense, including four on goal and single-handedly outshot the visitors.
The Spiders buried the Hawks (3-14-0, 1-8-0) in shots 34-4 and out-cornered them 8-2.
Jessie Wolfe, who blasted five shots, put Richmond up 2-0 in the 20th minute when she headed home a crossing pass from Jen Stalter. Hazel's goal put Richmond up 3-0 at the half.
Kristin Schmidt's assist on Holland's second goal was her first point of the season.
Holland, who entered the night with just one goal on the season, vaulted herself to second among the team's leading scorer.
Kate Hudson collected two saves to earn the victory.
Richmond returns to action Sunday, hosting Temple at 12 p.m. at First Market Stadium. That game is the first of a doubleheader. The men's team hosts Charlotte at 2:30 p.m.
