UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's soccer team moved one step closer to an Atlantic 10 Championship berth by holding on to beat Temple, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in the team's regular-season home finale. Kristen Stalter and Anne Hazel each scored for the Spiders, who improved to 5-3-1 in A-10 play.
Hazel netted her second goal in as many matches to put Richmond on the board first in the 28th minute. Hazel took a cross from Carrie Holland and slipped a shot past Temple keeper Kara Williams from close range.
Richmond extended its lead to 2-0 nine minutes later, thanks to the second goal of the season from Stalter. She took a well-timed pass from Kristen Schmidt and blasted a shot from 20 yards out to the left upper 90.
Although outshooting the visiting Owls 10-1 in the second half, Temple pulled within one on its lone shot. In the 68th minute, Cori Gallagher bombed a free kick from 30 yards past a diving Kate Hudson to the left upper 90.
Holland capped her career weekend with the assist on Richmond's first goal. The senior scored twice and had as assist in Friday's 4-0 win over Saint Joseph's.
The Spiders have now won three consecutive A-10 matches by a combined score of 9-3 and control their own destiny for an A-10 Championship berth heading into next weekend's matches.
Richmond is at Massachusetts Friday and at Rhode Island Sunday. Two wins will secure a berth, regardless of any other results.
