RESULTS | UTLEY TALKS ABOUT THE WIN
Richmond senior Jordan Utley shot an even-par 70 Tuesday to win the ODU/Seascape Invitational at 3-under-par 137 to win by one stroke. It was the second-straight medalist for the Spiders. Sophomore Hunter Townsend won the Georgetown Hoya Invitational last Tuesday.
"This is obviously great for the program, having a medalist in back-to-back weeks," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "I'm really happy for Jordan. He hung in there, there were some tough conditions out there."
The victory was the second of his career for Utley, who won the Joe Agee Invitational at Stonehouse Golf Club on Oct. 3, 2006.
"He picked up his second victory of his career, that's pretty special," Decker said. "We're very excited for him."
Playing the last round of the fall season, Richmond shot a 10-over 290 on Tuesday and dropped from third place into a tie for fifth in the 21-team tournament with Winthrop at 578.
"We just got off to a really slow start and were never able to catch back up, we went in the wrong direction," Decker said. "We've got some work to do in the offseason, we've got to pick things up and now we definitely have some motivation."
Utley shot a 3-under 67 in Monday's first round and was in a three-way tie for first entering the final round of the 36-hole tournament on the par-70, 6,131-yard Seascape Golf Club.
"Yesterday I felt like I really had a chance to put the tournament a little bit out of reach, but I let some bogeys come back into play late in the round," Utley said. "Today it was very important to get off to a good start, and I did."
Utley has now shot three-straight rounds at 70 or below and five-straight rounds at par or below. The Richmond, Va. native becomes just the fifth player in Spider golf history to win multiple tournaments. Two golfers have won a school-record three tournaments. Steve Jamoroz won three from 1992-95 and Joe Horowitz won three from 1999-01.
"Last year was great to do it once, and to have the opportunity to do it again, you have to take advantage," Utley said. "You never want stop winning, so hopefully there will be more chances."
Townsend won the Georgetown Hoya Invitational in a three-hole playoff last week. Decker now has coached three individual tournament winners and two tournament champions in his three years at Richmond.
Richmond sophomore Robert Lindstrom tied for 11th at 1-over-par 141 after shooting a 2-under 68 on Tuesday. Junior Tim Courtney tied for 29th at 6-over 146 (69-77) and Townsend tied for 81st at 154 (79-75). Junior Grant Rafield tied for 98th at 161 (83-78).
This was the last tournament of the fall season for the Spiders, who posted top-5 finishes in three of the four tournaments. Richmond finished second at both the Frank Landry Invitational and the Georgetown Hoya Invitational.
"I felt like we had some really good things going on this fall and now it's just matter of improving and getting better for the spring season," Utley said. "The expectations have to be relatively high and I think we can definitely do some good work in the spring. It's just a matter of taking care of business."
The Spiders open the 2008 spring season at the Cuthbert Cup on Feb. 24-26.
