Fast Breaks:
The Spiders are 3-4 heading into Thursday's contest against Longwood. Redshirt junior Johanna McKnight leads Richmond averaging 15 points per game. McKnight has led the Spiders in three of their last three games. Thursday night's game will be the Spiders' first game at the Robins Center in over two weeks.
Longwood is 2-4 on the year as they travel from Farmville to Richmond this week. The Lancers have victories over Howard and Morgan St, while they have suffered loses to American, Virginia, Saint Francis and George Mason. Longwood's Keiva Small leads the Lancers averaging 14.3 points per game. This is the first contest between Richmond women's basketball and Longwood.
Richmond leads the all-time series record with Longwood, 19-12. The two teams have not met since 1983.
Richmond is looking for their first win at The Robins Center in the 2007-08 season. Head coach Michael Shafer is looking forward to showing the fans how good of a basketball team his Spiders are this season. The Spider have won two of their last three games. Richmond travelled to William and Mary where they beat in-state rival 68-64 (11/20) then travelled to Las Vegas to participate in the UNLV Lady Rebel Shootout where the Spiders beat host UNLV in the first round, 68-59 (11/23) but fell to Montana in the finals, 86-81 (11/24).
Redshirt senior Christina Campion ended her junior season with 997 points, just three points short of reaching the 1,000 point mark. In Richmond's first game at Georgia, Camps earned her 1,000th point and added one with a four point performance against the ninth ranked Lady Bulldogs. That same weekend, Camps put up 12 points in Richmond's win against Kennesaw St., bringing her career points total to 1,059.
Redshirt junior, Johanna McKnight, currently leads the Spiders averaging 15 points per game. McKnight led the Spiders in all three of their games last week, scoring 19 at William and Mary, a career-high 25 points at UNLV and 18 against Montana. McKnight's scoring does not outshine her defense however. The native of Kenner, Louisiana also leads the Spiders with 14 steals in the 2007-08 season. McKnight also averages the most rebounds per game out of the Spiders' guards, pulling down 5.1 per game. From the three-point line, McKnight is shooting 53.3%, higher than any other Spider from behind the arc.
