The Spiders are now 4-4 (.500) after getting their first win of the season at the Robins Center as they beat Longwood, 62-45 (11/29). Head coach Johanna McKnight leads the Spiders averaging 14 points per game. Freshman Brittani Shells led the Spiders in their victory over Longwood with 17 points.
George Mason is 3-2 heading into Saturday's matinee at the Robins Center. The Patriots suffered their only two losses to common-opponent Georgia and Seton Hall. Mason earned their latest win against Longwood, 58-53. Senior Lateisha Wade leads the Patriots averaging just over 16 points per game.
. Richmond leads the all-time series record with George Mason, 29-22. The two teams have not met since 2001. Heading into Thursday's game, the Spiders are 4-4, while Mason is 3-2. Richmond has earned their four wins against in-state rival William and Mary, UNLV, Kennesaw St. and most recently Longwood. Richmond is looking for their second straight win at the Robins Center in the 2007-08 season. Head coach Michael Shafer is looking forward to showing the fans how good of a basketball team his Spiders are this season.
Redshirt senior Christina Campion ended her junior season with 997 points, just three points short of reaching the 1,000 point mark. In Richmond's first game at Georgia, Camps earned her 1,000th point and added one with a four point performance against the ninth ranked Lady Bulldogs. That same weekend, Camps put up 12 points in Richmond's win against Kennesaw St., bringing her career points total to 1,057.
Redshirt junior, Johanna McKnight, currently leads the Spiders averaging 14 points per game. McKnight led the Spiders in all three of their games last week (11/19-11/25), scoring 19 at William and Mary, a career-high 25 points at UNLV and 18 against Montana. McKnight's scoring does not outshine her defense however. The native of Kenner, Louisiana also leads the Spiders with 14 steals in the 2007-08 season. McKnight also averages the most rebounds per game out of the Spiders' guards, pulling down 4.9 per game. From the three-point line, McKnight is shooting 50%, higher than any other Spider from behind the arc.
Freshman Brittani Shells has started the 2007-08 with a bang. The native of Camden, Delaware has led the Spiders in two of their three first games. Against Georgia, Shells put up 13 points, then against Fairfield recorded a career high 27 points. The freshman led the Spiders in their fourth win of the season against Longwood with 17 points. Shells also averages 28.4 minutes per game, ranking fourth amongst the Spider. Per game, Shells is averaging 12.1 points and is shooting 42.9% from the floor.
