KINGSTON, RI - The Richmond women's soccer team scored early with a goal from senior Carrie Holland, as the Spiders beat Rhode Island 1-0 in the final match of the regular season. The win sealed a spot for the Spiders in the Atlantic 10 Championship. Richmond is the sixth-seed and will play third-seeded Duquesne Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Charlotte's Transamerica Field.
Richmond took the lead in the eighth minute, with Holland's fourth goal of the season, and never looked back. Rhode Island out shot the Spiders 10-8, but Richmond goalkeeper, Kate Hudson made 5 saves to hold the Rams scoreless. The win shot the Spiders into post-season play.
With a 6-5 record in A-10 regular season play, Coach Peter Albright and the Spiders head to the A-10 Championship for the first time since 2004. The number one seeded UNC Charlotte is hosting this year's tournament at their Transamerica Field.
Richmond will need to beat Duquesne on Thursday to advance in tournament play. The Spiders lost to the Dukes in early October, 2-1; sophomore Kristen Stalter scored the lone Richmond goal.
If Richmond gets past Duquesne on Thursday, they will face Charlotte Friday, Nov. 9, at 5:30pm.
