CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
The women's soccer team shut out Duquesne, 2-0 in the first round of Atlantic 10 Championship Thursday at Charlotte, NC. Senior Christine Wrublesky and sophomore Jessie Knight scored for the Spiders. The sixth-seeded Spiders (8-11-2) move onto the second round to face the number one seeded host Charlotte 49ers, Friday at 5:30 p.m. ET.
Wrublesky netted her first goal of the season in the 18th minute of play with help from junior high-scorer Jessie Wolfe. The shot was hit from five yards out to the right post to get by Duquesne goalkeeper Gabby Morrin.
"We played an excellent first half," head coach Peter Albright commented on his team's performance. "We got a really nice goal from Wrublesky and we were really in control of the game."
Richmond controlled play throughout the first half but needed to withstand a fired-up Duquesne (11-7-0) squad in the second half. Play went back and forth until Knight found the back of the net in the 82nd minute. In a one-on-one play with a Duquesne defender, Knight got her second goal of the season, with help from Jen Ruhe and Nora Mann.
"We played really well, it was a good team win, just fun to be playing and advancing," Albright said.
Albright and his Spiders look forward to facing Charlotte, the number one seed and the host of the A-10 tournament. When Richmond travelled to Charlotte earlier in the season, the game went into overtime but the Spiders could not get the win in extra minutes.
