UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Two years ago Old Dominion was coming off a lopsided home win against DePaul. On this trip to the Robins Center the Monarchs were fresh off a home victory over Virginia Tech. Richmond head coach Chris Mooney and the Spiders cut short Old Dominion's parade both times.
Freshman Kevin Anderson scored all 10 of his points in the second half as Richmond defeated the Monarchs 55-49 Wednesday night.
"Two years ago we just got done beating DePaul by 44 and we come up here and get ambushed, then we just get done beating Virginia Tech, come up here and get ambushed," Old Dominion coach Blaine Taylor said. "It seems like Chris has done a nice job kind of saying, `let's ambush these guys."
Richmond handed Old Dominion its sixth-straight Robins Center loss and the Spiders won for the sixth time in the last seven meetings between the two teams. The Spiders (5-6) snapped Old Dominion's three-game winning streak. Richmond became the first non-ranked opponent to take down the Monarchs (6-5) this season. Old Dominion's losses were to nationally ranked North Carolina, Georgetown Clemson and Louisville.
Sophomore Dan Geriot led a balanced Spider attack with 13 points. Richmond had 10 players score, but only two players scored more than six points.
"It's huge because their coming off a big win against Virginia Tech and they are a really good team," Geriot said of the win. "They have been getting a lot of wins the past couple of years. It's big for us to get this win at home too. We have to start showing that we are good. We work way too hard in practice and way too hard in the offseason to be 5-6 like we are right now. We have to start to get more wins."
Richmond led 24-19 at the half and pushed the lead to nine (33-24) with 13 minutes to play. Unlike in other games this season, the Spiders finished the game strong, scoring 20 points in the last eight minutes to hold off Old Dominion.
The Spiders outrebounded Old Dominion 31-26, marking just the second time Richmond won the rebounding battle this season.
"We had to control the tempo, but most importantly we had to control the offensive glass," Anderson said. "We've been getting killed on the offensive glass - just rebounding period - and we knew Old Dominion outrebounded their opponents, I think every game, so we've been doing a lot of rebounding drills in practice. If you control the glass, you control the game."
Darius James and Brandon Johnson each had 12 for the Monarchs.
Richmond returns to action on Dec. 30 when the Spiders host VMI at 6 p.m. in the Robins Center. The Spiders host Virginia Tech on Jan. 3, also at 6 p.m.
