Freshman Johanna McKnight was also recognized by the league earning a spot on the weekly honor roll. This is the first time Richmond student-athletes have been honored in the 2007-08 regular season. Redshirt senior Christina Campion was selected to the A-10 Preseason All-Conference Team in her last year as a Spider.
Shells led the Spiders in their wins over Longwood (11/29) and George Mason (12/1) with 17 and 18 points respectively, averaging 17.5 points per game. Overall this season, Shells is averaging 12.8 points per game and is shooting just over 40% from the floor. The freshman out of Camden, Del. has played in and started every game for the Spiders so far this season.
"I am excited for Brittani's honor this week. I really thought that she had a strong week," head coach Michael Shafer said. "She shot the ball well at home and was able to create some scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates. She did a nice job of taking what the defense gave her."
McKnight leads the Spiders averaging 14 points per game. The redshirt junior scored a career-high 25 points against UNLV in their Lady Rebel Shootout over Thanksgiving break. In last week's games, McKnight averaged 10.5 points per game and 6 rebounds, putting up seven against Longwood and 14 in the win against George Mason.
"I am enjoying watching Jo play this season; she has done a very nice job of playing within herself," Shafer said. "For the most part, she has made very good decisions with the ball and taken what the defense has given her. The work she did in the off season with her three-point shooting and pull ups has really paid off to this point."
Looking ahead, Richmond travels down the road to the Siegel Center to face off against the Rams of VCU Wednesday, December 5 at 5 p.m. ET.
