CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Richmond men's basketball team held Xavier to six first-half field goals, but the Musketeers shot 22-of-26 from the foul line before intermission to take a 34-20 lead at the break and never looked back in a 71-50 win Saturday in front of a sellout of 10,250 at Cintas Center.
The Spiders were down just five (22-17) with 6:21 to play in the first half when Xavier (19-7, 9-3 Atlantic 10) used a 12-3 run to close the period. The Musketeers would make 33-of-43 free throws for the game, while the Spiders made just 12-of-25.
"That's horrendous," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "When you're on the road you are going to need to make foul shots, no matter how loud it is, you need to step up there and make foul shots."
Freshman Brian Morris led the Spiders in scoring for the third-straight game with 11 points. It was the fourth-straight game Morris scored in double-figures and the third-straight game he has made at least three 3-pointers. He has 10 3-pointers in the last three games.
Junior Drew Crank freshman David Gonzalvez and freshman Dan Geriot each had seven points.
Richmond, which had out-rebounded Duquesne in its victory Wednesday night, got pounded on the boards 40-22, giving up 18 second-chance points.
"They are a very, very good, deep and talented team," Mooney said. "They overwhelmed us a little bit with their strength."
Brandon Cole led four Musketeers in double-figures with 17 points, making 11-of-13 free throws. Justin Doellman had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Justin Cage had 12 points and seven boards and Stanley Burrell had 11 points. Derrick Brown scored seven points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
After making a field goal 1:36 into the game to take a 2-0 lead, Xavier would make eight-straight free throws to take a 10-3 advantage. The Spiders came back thanks to an old-fashioned three-point play by Geriot and a 3-pointer by Morris to close the gap to 12-10.
Jumpers by red-shirt freshman Ryan Butler and Geriot had the Spiders within two at 16-14 with 8:53 to go in the half. The Musketeers went up eight (34-22) with 6:45 to play but a traditional three-point play by Crank cut the gap to 22-17 with 6:21. Xavier used seven-straight free throws to up advantage to 29-19 and would lead 34-10 at the half.
"In the first half, I thought we played well, we were right there," Mooney said. "If a couple of things go differently and we make some more foul shots, maybe you're down five or six at the half."
