Spiders Advance 10 Swimmers To Finals Tonight; Sit At Second Place In A-10 Championships After Day One

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Following preliminaries this morning, the Richmond Swimming and Diving squad, currently in second place at the A-10 Championships with 89 points, advanced 10 swimmers to the finals taking place this evening in Buffalo, N.Y. at 6:30 p.m.
Richmond move four swimmers on to finals action tonight in the 50 free after freshman Katie Sieben, sophomore C.J. Pisano (24:19), freshman Joanna Rakoczy (24.32) and freshman Alex Helland (24.34) each placed in the top five to advance to finals. Sieben's 23:84 in preliminaries moved her up to a tie for fourth in the Richmond record book.
In the 200 IM, the Spiders advanced four more swimmers to the finals with three placing in the top six in preliminary swims this morning. Sophomore Lauren Beaudreau, holder of the Richmond record in the event, led all swimmers by at least six seconds, logging in a 2:01.99, while sophomore Smaniotto turned in the 8th-best time in Richmond history (2:07.36) and freshman Beth Ann Platt finished with a 2:08.02. Junior Anastasia Lau will also advance to tonight's finals turning in a 2:12.30 time for a 13th place finish.
Richmond also dominated the 500 free, advancing both junior Jessica Witt and senior Caitlin Geary who took the first and second spots. Witt broke the Richmond record, logging a 4:52.16, while Geary followed closely with a personal-best 4:52.81.
