Women's Basketball Falls To No. 11/12 George Washington, 72-53

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond women's basketball team fell to No. 11/12 George Washington, 72-53, on Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center in the second meeting of the season, dropping its first contest in three games.
Richmond (10-13, 4-4 in A-10) clipped George Washington's lead to five points with 13:31 remaining in the second half on a three-pointer from freshman guard Erin Hawkins but the Colonials then embarked on a 23-9 run to close out the contest.
Redshirt sophomore guard Johanna McKnight was the lone Spider in double figures, finishing with 10 points on 4-for-10 shooting to go along with two steals.
Three Colonials scored in double digits as they recorded their 12th-straight win, including sophomore center Jessica Adair with 17 points that all came in the first half and junior guard Sarah-Jo Lawrence recording a double-double off 15 points and 11 rebounds. Kimberly Beck also added 16 points and Jazmine Adair came off the bench to pull 10 rebounds for the Colonials.
Richmond's bench contributed 25 of the team's 53 points and all reserves were paced in scoring by Spider freshman guard Danielle Bell, who ended the contest with nine points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in just 21 minutes played. Christina Campion also finished with nine points and Sarah Williams chipped in seven points, while freshman Nikita Thomas led the Spiders on the boards with six rebounds and freshman Kara Powell dished out a team-high four assists.
Facing an 11-0 deficit less just over five minutes into play, the Spiders fought back with three consecutive 3-pointers, as well as back-to-back baskets from freshman forward Katie Holzer, who finished the contest with six points, and a three-point play from Bell to close the game to just a two point difference (18-16) at the 10:10 mark.
The Colonials; however, were able to build up another lead and Richmond entered halftime down 44-28. The Spiders rallied back for the second time to score 12 consecutive points out of the break to narrow George Washington's advantage to four points. McKnight tallied eight of her 10 points in the second half to keep the Spiders close on the scoreboard, but they were unable to hold on and the Colonials pulled away with a 19-point win over the Spiders.
The Colonials held a 42-31 advantage on the boards and shot 47 percent while holding the Spiders to under 38 percent shooting.
Before playing the Colonials (19-2, 8-0 in A10) at home, Richmond had reeled off two-straight road victories. The Spiders will enjoy a five-day break from competition before traveling to Pennsylvania to challenge Temple on Friday, Feb. 9.
