UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - All-American Mandy Friend delivered her third five-goal performance of the season to lead the No. 13 Richmond women's lacrosse team (4-3) to its fourth-straight win over Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium.
Three other Spiders recorded hat tricks as well, including sophomore transfer Allison Furstenburg, junior Claire Cunniff and senior Morghan Vahue, while freshman Megan Jendrossek and sophomore Sarah Townsend chipped in one goal apiece in the win.
Friend also paced the team with four draw controls and three ground balls.
After getting off to a slow start and facing a 1-0 deficit following a goal from Mount St. Mary's Casey Paris, the Spiders rattled off 13-straight goals to take a 13-1 advantage in the seventh minute of the second half.
Cunniff sparked the run at the 19:05 mark by converting a free position shot before Mandy Friend netted her first three goals, the first two unassisted and the third off a free position attempt. The persistent sophomore's second goal came after following her own missed shot and grabbing the keeper's deflection and redirecting it to the back of the net. Friend then assisted Vahue on her first of three goals before notching her fourth goal of the afternoon.
Furstenburg then assisted Vahue on her second tally before putting in her first goal, unassisted, and Jendrossek notched her first collegiate goal as the clock ran out and the Spiders entered the break with a 9-1 advantage over the Mountaineers.
Cunniff, Furstenburg and Vahue opened the half with three more Spider goals before the Mountaineers answered with two consecutive goals, both from leading scorer Katelyn Catanese, bringing the score to 13-3.
Just under the 13-minute marker, Cunniff closed out her hat trick, ending the Mountaineers' run. Mandy Friend concluded her scoring action for the day with her fifth tally at the 10:04 mark and Townsend followed with the Spiders' final score at 5:34.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg finished with seven saves between the pipes, while the Mountaineers' Jane Karger ended the afternoon with 16 saves.
Richmond held a 13-7 advantage in draw controls and outshot Mount St. Mary's 41-12 as they handed the visiting Mountaineers (0-4) their fourth loss on the season.
The Spiders will return to the field on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. as they conclude their three-game home stand with Columbia at First Market Stadium.
