UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond baseball team launched six home runs on its way to a 15-2 victory over Towson on Monday at Pitt Field.
The victory was the Spiders' fifth in the last six games and evened their record at 9-9 on the season. Richmond hosts No. 7 ranked Virginia on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Pitt Field.
"It's good to get back to .500, but tomorrow's another story," Richmond head coach Ron Atkins said. "I don't think we can afford to strike out 10 times and beat a nationally ranked team."
Junior Hank Coogan led the home run barrage with two solo shots. Junior Joe Mahoney hit his team-leading fifth homer of the season, while sophomore Cameron Brown, senior Vince Riggi and senior Andrew Justice each hit round trippers.
Six home runs were the most for a Spider team since April 29, 2002 when Richmond hit six home runs in an 11-10 victory over George Washington. In a four-batter sequence in the sixth inning, Brown homered, Wotring singled, and then Riggi and Justice hit back-to-back dingers. The Spiders pounded out 14 hits, giving Richmond at least nine hits in six-straight games and seven of the last nine.
"The ball was flying out of here today," Atkins said. "We hit the ball hard."
Richmond junior Alex Hale earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Hale held Towson without a hit until the lead-off hitter in the fourth inning, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced and 14 of the first 16.
"I think Hale pitched a really good game, he got his work in before the weekend," Atkins said.
The one run Hale allowed came in the sixth when he hit the lead-off batter, walked the next batter, and after a strikeout, gave up a chopper to the left side of the infield that took a bad hop into the outfield.
Hale gave up just two hits and one run in six innings, while striking out seven. Sophomore Ian Marshall and senior Lane Holby combined to allow thre hits and one run over the final three innings of relief.
Coogan finished the game 2-for- 5 with the two homers, two runs scored and three RBIs. Senior Alex Wotring went 3-for-6 with two doubles and three RBIs. Riggi went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and three RBIs. Justice went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and Brown went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and four runs scored.
The Spiders host the No. 7 ranked Cavaliers on Tuesday at 3 p.m. and host George Mason on Wednesday at 3 p.m. before opening conference play with a three-game at three-time defending Atlantic 10 regular-season champion Rhode Island on Friday at 3 p.m.
