UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Allison Furstenburg and Mandy Friend each delivered four-goal performances to lead the No. 20 Richmond women's lacrosse team to a dominating 17-10 victory over Old Dominion on Thursday afternoon at First Market Stadium rounding out its non-conference slate with its fourth-straight win over the Lady Monarchs.
Thursday marked Furstenburg's second-straight four-goal game and fifth hat trick of the season, while Friend notched her sixth hat trick of the season. The Spiders also received a hat trick from senior Ashley Friend, her third of the season, as well as two goals apiece from senior Morghan Vahue and junior Erin Kennedy. Sophomore Katy Smullen and junior Claire Cunniff each chipped in one goal.
The Spiders opened the game with four of the first five goals, taking a 4-1 lead at the 23:28 mark. Cunniff won the opening draw to put the first Spider tally up just 16 seconds into the contest, which ODU's Ashley Stanwick responded with her first of two goals just over two minutes later to knot the game, 1-1.
The Spiders rattled off three-straight goal, including an unassisted goal from Furstenburg, a free position score by Kennedy and a goal from Ashley Friend off an assist from Megan Riedy. The Lady Monarchs pulled together a 2-0 run in less than a minute and a half span to close the game to a one goal differential (4-3) with over 18 minutes remaining until intermission. Jessica Noone, who closed the game with four goals, tallied one marker in the run, as well as Caroline Jacobs, who finished with two on the afternoon.
Richmond's Mandy Friend and Vahue each found the back of the net over the course of the next seven minutes to pull the Spiders to a three-goal lead (6-3); however, Old Dominion's Noone converted a free position attempt for her second tally of the afternoon at 11:05 to keep the Spiders within a two-goal reach.
Richmond was able to put four of the next five scores in, taking a 10-5 advantage with 1:51 remaining; however, Old Dominion's Noone slipped one more goal in before the break to halt the Spider run and close the gap to a four goal (10-6) Spider halftime advantage.
Mandy Friend chipped in a free position goal, while Furstenburg assisted Kennedy on a goal to round out the Spiders' scoring in the 10-minute Richmond surge.
The Monarchs' Jacobs found the back of the net in the first five minutes of the second half off a free position attempt, closing the Spiders' lead to three (10-7), but the Spiders used a pair of goals from Mandy Friend and a tally from Furstenburg to pull together their third 3-0 run of the contest and take a 13-7 lead at the 19:27 mark.
Old Dominion responded with two goals, one from Ashley Stanwick and a fourth from Noone, before the Spiders hit another run, this time rattling off four-straight goals in the final 13 minutes. Vahue and Smullen each contributed a goal, while Furstenburg capped off the Spiders' scoring for the afternoon with a pair of goals, giving the Spiders a 17-9 advantage with 2:17 remaining.
The Monarchs (3-3) put in one more goal behind the effort of Kelly Kimener but it was not enough to overcome the 17-10 lead that the Spiders had built, and they dropped their second-straight contest to a nationally-ranked opponent.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg finished with six saves between the pipes, while Erica Marracco came up with one save in two minutes of action. Richmond finished with an advantage in draw controls (16-13) and shots (29-24) to help them jump back on the winning track.
The Spiders (6-4) will kick off Atlantic 10 action with George Washington on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium.
