AMHERST, Mass. - Led by Allison Furstenburg's eighth hat trick of the season, the Richmond women's lacrosse team toppled Massachusetts 10-4 in an A-10 contest Sunday at McGuirk Stadium to take its fourth win in the last five games and its fifth-straight win over the Minutewomen.
Furstenburg finished the contest with four goals, while sophomore Mandy Friend and senior Morghan Vahue each notched two goals on the afternoon. Friend also added three assists, while Vahue notched one helper in the win. Senior Ashley Friend put in one goal and a team season-high six draw controls and junior Jenna Hubbard found the back of the net once as the Spiders jumped back on the winning track and handed UMass (5-8, 0-3 in A-10) its fourth-straight loss.
Although UMass jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening nine minutes off a pair of goals from leading scorer Kathleen Typadis, the Spiders (9-5, 3-1) rattled off four-straight goals before the close of the half to take a 4-2 advantage heading into intermission.
Mandy Friend netted the first Richmond goal with 13:45 on the clock and Furstenburg followed with back-to-back goals, the first one finding the back of the net less than 40 seconds after Friend's goal. Her second of the series came off an assist from senior back Megan Riedy with 5:14 remaining in the half. The final goal in the 4-0 Spider run came from Vahue off a helper from Zara Nematollahi with just 50 seconds to go.
Richmond continued their run well into the second half. Ashley Friend won the opening draw for a Spider possession and then sister Mandy assisted Hubbard on the Spiders' fifth consecutive goal of the contest just 27 seconds into play. Less than six minutes later, Mandy followed with her own goal, her second of the afternoon, before Richmond would find the back of the net twice in a 26 second span to close out an 8-0 run.
Vahue assisted Mandy Friend helper at 21:05 as the Spiders took a six-goal (8-2) over the Minutewomen. Stephanie Hopkins broke through with a goal for UMass, putting the Minutewomen on the scoreboard for the first time in over 34 minutes; however Furstenburg responded with her fourth tally of the contest just under a minute later to keep the Minutewomen within a six-goal distance (9-3).
After almost 12 minutes of scoreless action, Vahue notched her second goal of the afternoon off an assist from Mandy Friend for a 10-3 Spider advantage, but the Minutewomen closed the game with one final goal from Melynda Zwick just under the three minute marker.
Spider keeper Jackie Swansburg posted nine saves between the pipes, limiting her opponent to less than five scorers for the third time this season.
The Spiders will round out their season with a three-game home stand, beginning with La Salle on Sunday, April 22 at 1:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium. Live coverage of the Spiders' contests, including live stats and video streaming, will be available at RichmondSpiders.com.
