Women's Tennis Downs Saint Louis; Advances To Semifinals Of A-10 Tournament

MONROEVILLE, Pa. - Seeking its fourth consecutive A-10 title and fifth in the last six years, the Richmond women's tennis team turned aside No. 7 Saint Louis, 4-0, on Friday afternoon on the strength of wins by Robin Carter, Beatrice Grasu and Ashlee Vosters in singles action.
The Spiders will continue their quest for another title tomorrow as they compete against third-seeded Charlotte in the semifinals at 1:00 p.m. at the Club 4 Life in Monroeville, Pa.
In doubles action, Grasu and Carter paired up for a 9-7 victory over Katie Lozanova and Tara Grant at the no. 1 position, while teammates Xenia Schneider and Jessica Hubbard came through with an 8-4 win at the no. 3 spot to secure the doubles point for Richmond.
"I think we were a little nervous to start play in doubles, but we did a good job playing through those first-match nerves," said Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink.
The Spiders continued their winning ways into singles play, with Grasu and Vosters dominating at the no. 3 and 4 positions, respectively, each blanking their opponents, while Carter picked up a straight-set win at second singles for the 4-0 Spider victory.
"Beatrice and Ashlee just played so well in singles," said Wesselink. Vosters win was her seventh singles win in the last eight matches.
The Spiders (7-7) earned their seventh win in the last eighth match with the win over the Billikens on Friday and will look to take a winning mark on the season with a win over the 49ers on Saturday.
