UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore All-American Mandy Friend delivered a five-goal performance, eclipsing the 100th career-goal marker as she led the Richmond women's lacrosse team to a dominating 17-8 victory over the first-place St. Bonaventure Bonnies on Friday afternoon at First Market Stadium.
Friend delivered her 10th hat trick and fourth five-goal performance of the season en route to becoming just the eighth Spider in history to reach 100 career goals and one of just two active sophomores in NCAA Division I Lacrosse to have achieved such a feat. Senior sister Ashley Friend, who is among those eight Spiders and well over 100 goals, and senior Morghan Vahue also recorded hat tricks in the win, while Allison Furstenburg and Erin Kennedy added two goals apiece.
Juniors Jenna Hubbard and Zara Nematollahi also tallied one goal each as the Spiders handed St. Bonaventure its first conference loss and avenged last year's two-goal loss to the Bonnies that ended their 11-game win streak.
Although the Bonnies jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first two minutes of play off a Stephanie Jordan goal, the Spiders put in two consecutive goals to steal a 2-1 advantage. Hubbard notched the first Spider goal, knotting the game at 24:35 before Kennedy converted a free position shot for her first of two goals on the afternoon.
St. Bonaventure leading scorer Katelyn Faas, who was limited to just two scores on Friday, knotted the game for the second and final time of the afternoon with a free position goal before the Spiders rattled off seven-straight goals to close the half with a 9-2 lead.
Mandy Friend sparked the run with three consecutive goals in an amazing 20 second span, the first of which came off a quick pass from Furstenburg. Friend's second tally came as she won the ensuing draw from her first goal and took on the Bonnies' defense, whisking by them for her 100th career goal. Megan Riedy then won the ensuing draw and gave it off to the hot hands of Friend as she put in her third-straight goal.
Ashley Friend jumped in on the scoring action just under six minutes later with a free position goal before assisting Furstenburg on the Spiders fifth straight goal. Ashley then took a pass from sister Mandy for her second goal and the Spiders' eighth of the half at the 3:39 mark. Just before the clock ran out, with 0:16 remaining, Lexie Marrocco assisted Vahue on her first goal as the Spiders entered the intermission with a seven-goal (9-2) advantage.
The Bonnies' Kimberly Ross opened the second half with a quick unassisted goal; however, Richmond's Nematollahi answered with a goal off a helper from Hubbard. Ross responded with another Bonnie goal but the Spiders scored five of the next six goals, including rattling off three-straight goals from Mandy Friend, Kennedy and Furstenburg, all unassisted, to take a 12-4 lead with just over 20 minutes remaining in play.
Faas notched the lone Bonnie goal before Vahue added an unassisted goal, her second of the afternoon, and Mandy Friend rounded out her scoring off a helper from sister Ashley.
The Bonnies (8-5, 5-1) were able to fire in three more goals in their efforts; however, Ashley Friend and Vahue each added one more goal apiece to round out their hat tricks, with Vahue scoring another goal in the final 0:16 seconds, a repeat performance from the first half, to give the Spiders their third-straight win.
The Spiders finished the contest with an advantage in ground balls (11-8), shots (46-16) and draw controls (21-6), including six draw controls from Mandy Friend. The two sisters also added two assists each to go along with their hat tricks.
The Spiders (11-5 overall and 5-1 in the A-10), winners of six of their last seven contests, will conclude the regular season with Duquesne (7-8, 2-3 A-10) on senior day Sunday at 1:00 p.m. as they battle for a first-place finish in the league. Live coverage of the Sunday's contests will be available at RichmondSpiders.com.
