HUNTINGTON, W.V. - Sophomore Grant Rafield shot a 1-over-par 72 to lead the Richmond men's golf team to a 20-over-par 294 in the first round, which has the Spiders four shots out of third place at the 38th Annual Marshall Invitational.
The second was cut short due to snow flurries and will be resumed Saturday morning. If the weather does not cooperate, the planned 54-hole tournament could be shortened to 36 holes.
Richmond is in 12th place out of 16 teams, but the field is very closely bunched. Richmond is one shot out of 10th place, two shots out of eighth, three out of seventh and four shots away from third place. Ball State has the lead after one round with a 282 and Penn State is in second with a 285. Marshall, Marquette, Akron and Eastern Michigan are in a four-way tie for third at 290.
Rafield is in a tie for 14th after shooting a 1-over par 72 on the par-71, 6,476 Guyan Country Club. He is four shots of the lead, which belongs to Marquette's Mike Van Sickle and Penn State's Kevin Foley.
