Mandy Friend and Swansburg Earn IWLCA All-Regional Honors

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Following the conclusion of the Spiders' third-straight season capturing the A-10 Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament, Richmond sophomore midfielder Mandy Friend and senior goalkeeper Jackie Swansburg were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division I All-Regional South Team. Friend was named to the first team, while Swansburg earned second team honors, each for the second-straight year.
Friend and Swansburg were two of just 128 Division 1 lacrosse players honored by the IWLCA.
Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.) earns IWLCA All-South honors for the second-straight year after another standout season which she posted 62 goals and 77 points, both new Richmond single season records. She scored in all but one contest, posting 12 hat tricks, four five-goal games, a career-high six-goal performance to lead the Spiders in the A-10 Championship game and three game-winners.
Friend, one of just three sophomores in the nation with over 100 career goals (115), concluded her season on a 16-game scoring streak and ranked 14th in the nation in the scoring column. After just her second season at Richmond, she already ranks sixth all-time in career points (153) and goals scored and seventh in assists (36).
Friend adds this honor to a collection of awards, including being named the leagues' Co-Offensive Player of the Year and the A-10 Championship's Most Outstanding Performer, being selected to the A-10 Championship and All-Conference first teams for the second-straight season and being named A-10 Player of the Week (2/26).
Friend also earned preseason honors, as she was selected as one of just 34 players in the country named to The Tewaaraton Award Foundation's Spring 2007 Women's Preseason Watch List in addition to being named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American second team. She is also coming off a standout rookie season which she was named an All-American third team selection and Rookie All-American, the A-10 Rookie of the Year, and a five-time A-10 Rookie of the Week selection, among many others.
Swansburg, a fifth-year senior goalkeeper who has started every game over the last three seasons, earns second-team All-Regional honors for the second-straight year after recording 182 saves, concluding her collegiate career as Richmond's second all-time leader in saves (651).
Swansburg, the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, led the A-10 in save percentage (.523) and GAA (8.00), earning her A-10 Player of the Week (3/12) and All-Conference honors, as well as a spot on the All-Championship team. Swansburg then went on to deliver an outstanding 16-save performance against #6 North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament and concluded the season ranked 8th in the nation for GAA (8.16) and save percentage (.529)
A native of Beverly, Mass., Swansburg has made double-digit saves in seven games, four of which were against Top 10 opponents, and limited three opponents to four goals or less.
Richmond concluded the 2007 season with a flourish, winning nine of its last 11 games, finishing with a 14-6 mark, its second-straight A-10 regular season title, and its third-straight A-10 Championship and NCAA appearance.
