WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - The Richmond men's golf team is playing in the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship Friday through Sunday at Orange County National Golf Club.
The Spiders will look to improve on their fourth-place finish from last year's conference championship. The 12-team, 54-hole event will be played over three days with each day's tee times beginning at 8 a.m. This is the second-straight year that the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship will be held at Orange County National's par-72, 6,816-yard Panther Lake course.
Richmond will be led by two all-conference honorees from last year, senior John Pelet and junior Jordan Utley. Pelet tied for fifth last year, shooting a final round 67 which was the best round of the tournament.
Joining Pelet and Utley at Orange County National are sophomore Tim Courtney, who just posted his best career finish by tying for seventh at the Cavalier Classic. Junior Billy Hanes and sophomore Grant Rafield round out the lineup.
"We're going down there to make a run at the championship," Richmond head men's coach Adam Decker. "If we put it all together, we will be right in the mix."
Richmond has finished in the top-five in all five Atlantic 10 Championships it has participated. The Spiders finished fourth last spring, tied for third in 2005, finished third in 2004, tied for fourth in 2003 and finished fifth in 2002. Last year five Atlantic 10 teams, including Richmond, reached the NCAA Golf Championship.
In five A-10 Championship appearances, the Spiders have had six all-conference selections. Along with Pelet and Utley from last year, Kyle Heass was a two-time All-Atlantic 10 selection after finishing third in 2004 and fifth in 2003. Steve Lessing earned all-conference honors for taking sixth in 2004 and Steven Sherck tied for sixth last spring.
