WINTER GARDEN, Fla. - Sophomore Tim Courtney tied for 10th to earn all-conference honors and the Richmond men's golf team shot a season-low round of 283 Sunday to finish fourth at 2007 Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship, played at Orange County National Golf Club.
The Spiders were in ninth after the first round Friday, climbed to seventh with a 3-under-par 285 on Saturday and improved to 5-under-par 283 Sunday to place fourth for the second-straight year with an 875. The Spiders have finished in the top-5 in all six Atlantic 10 Championships that they have competed in.
Charlotte won the tournament, Xavier finished second and St. Bonaventure took third. Richmond passed fifth-place George Washington, sixth-place Saint Joseph's and seventh-place Rhode Island.
"We played well again today," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "I'm proud of the way the guys battled back after a poor first round, never gave up and made a good run at the end."
Courtney tied for 10th, earning him All-Atlantic 10 honors for finishing in the top 10. He shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to finish the tournament at 3-under-par 213. Courtney had shot a 3-under 69 in the second round and a 2-over 74 in the first round.
"I'm proud of Tim's finish and for the way that he came back this spring semester and really contributed to the team," Decker said.
Senior John Pelet, playing in his last collegiate round, shot an even-par 72 for the second-straight day to finish in a tie for 16th at 1-over 217.
Junior Jordan Utley shot a 5-under-par 67, the Spiders' low round for the tournament, to finish the tournament at 3-over 219 in a tie for 19th. Junior Billy Hanes shot a 2-over 74 on Sunday after a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday to tie for 34th at 10-over-par 226. Sophomore Grant Rafield finished 57th at 244.
"We definitely learned some lessons this week," Decker said. "We're looking forward to next season."
