Spider Lacrosse Learns Fate In NCAA Championships

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - After capturing the program's third-straight A-10 Championship, the Richmond women's lacrosse team earned the program's third invitation to the NCAA Championships in as many years and will face the sixth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels (15-4) in first round action Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to play such an impacting ACC team and thrilled that we are peaking," said Richmond head coach Sue Murphy.
Richmond, now 14-5, is one of only 16 teams competing for the national championships. The field was announced Monday night via web cast.
The Spiders, winners of their last six games and nine of their last 10, received the conference's automatic berth after winning their third league title Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa.
The top-seeded Spiders knocked off fourth-seeded Temple 13-6 the in the semi-finals on Friday and then overpowered the second-seeded George Washington Colonials, 15-7, on Sunday to seal their trip to the NCAA's.
The sixth-seeded Tar Heels received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, returning to the NCAA Tournament for the third season in a row and ninth time in 12 years as a varsity program. UNC reached the quarterfinal round in 2006 before losing to two-time champions Northwestern.
The Spiders and the Tar Heels last played in 1998 when the Tar Heels defeated the Spiders 19-5 in Richmond.
The winner between the North Carolina-Richmond battle will advance to play the winner of Sunday's first-round contest between third-seeded Virginia (16-3) and Princeton (10-6). Quarterfinal-round games are scheduled for Saturday, May 19.
