Five Spiders Named To VaSID All-State Lacrosse Team

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Five Spider student-athletes earned VaSID lacrosse honors in voting conducted by Sports Information Directors across Virginia. Sophomore Mandy Friend and senior Jackie Swansburg earned VaSID first team honors while sophomore Allison Furstenburg and seniors Ashley Friend and Megan Riedy earned second team honors.
The Friend sisters, Swansburg, Furstenburg and Riedy were five of just 24 student-athletes in a Virginia University lacrosse program recognized for their standout play this past season.
Mandy Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.), earns first team VaSID honors for the second straight year after a standout season which she scored in all but one game, including 12 hat tricks, and finished with a program-best 62 goals and 77 points. The two-time All-American, A-10 First Team All-Conference and A-10 Championship team honoree, was named the leagues' Co-Offensive Player of the Year and the A-10 Championship's Most Outstanding Performer. She was also selected to the VaSID Academic All-State squad, named A-10 Player of the Week (2/26) and earned preseason honors, as she was one of just 34 players in the country named to The Tewaaraton Award Foundation's Spring 2007 Women's Preseason Watch List, in addition to being named a Preseason All-American.
Swansburg (Beverly, Mass.), the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, two-time First Team All-Conference member and three-time A-10 Championship Team member, earns VaSID first team honors for the second consecutive year after posting double digit saves in seven games, four of which were against a Top 10 opponent, and limiting three opponents to four goals or less. The co-captain and A-10 Player of the Week honoree was the conference leader in both save % and GAA and concluded the season ranked 8th in the nation for GAA (8.16) and save percentage (.529).
Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), an A-10 All-Conference second team, A-10 Championship team and A-10 Player of the Week honoree, earns VaSID honors after a standout season which she scored in all but three games, tallying multiple goals in 14 games, including 10 hat tricks. She recorded a team-best seven goals and two assists vs. Virginia Tech (2/18).
Ashley Friend (Canandaigua, N.Y.), a three-time A-10 Championship Team member and two-time A-10 First Team All-Conference honoree, earns VaSID second team honors for the second-straight season. Friend started every game of her decorated career putting in 133 career goals and 37 assists for a total of 170 career points, all placing her in the top five in the Richmond career record book. The Preseason All-American and co-captain earned A-10 Player of the Week and womenslacrosse.com honorable mention honors throughout her final season which she scored in all but three games, putting multiple goal performances in 10 games, including six hat tricks.
Riedy (Ellicott City, Md.), an A-10 First Team All-Conference and A-10 Championship Team honoree, earns VaSID second team honors for the second consecutive year. She started all but one game of collegiate career, adding four assists this season and three career goals. A co-captain and 2006 Preseason All-American, she served as Richmond's top mark-down defender, possessing dominate speed in transitional game.
