UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - For the 12th consecutive year, players and staff from the University of Richmond football team volunteered at the Virginia Special Olympics. Thirty members of the Spiders' team were on-hand through the weekend and head coach Dave Clawson addressed the athletes at the Opening Ceremony Friday evening at a packed Robins Center.
"We're very proud to part of an event like this," said Clawson. "Our team has enjoyed a great partnership with the Virginia Special Olympics over the last 12 years and we look forward to it continuing in the future."
The Spider football team's participation at the event was stared by former head coach Jim Reid and now carried on by Clawson.
The Spiders helped organize the Opening Ceremony and served as volunteers at the power lifting event, held inside the Robins Center. The outdoor events were contested at First Market Stadium.
"Our guys do a great job," said Clawson. "They were here late Friday night setting up the Robins Center and have been acting as spotters today during the lifting events."
The Summer Games is the largest state-wide event put on by Special Olympics Virginia and includes the events of power lifting, bowling, softball, swimming, tennis and track & field.
