As Richmond's football preseason camp ended its first week, RichmondSpiders.com caught up with defensive lineman Bryan DeMoss to give us his thoughts on camp so far. DeMoss, a 6-3 senior from Myersville, Maryland, is one of a handful of returning veterans from a defense that ranked 11th nationally against the run last season (268.7 yards/game) and 22nd in scoring defense (18.0 points/game). DeMoss, along with returning starters David Horton, Andrew Harris and Stephen Howell, will be looked on to mentor a young -- but fast -- defensive corps.
Take us through a typical camp day...
"We wake up around 6:30 every morning to get breakfast and get treatments. Practice starts about 7:45. After practice we have an 11 o'clock brunch. After lunch, we lift in groups, depending on what position you are. After that, we have positional meetings that last until about 4:30. We have special teams meetings - for those that have to be there - until about 5. At 5 p.m., it's dinner and we eat until 6:30 p.m. After that, we have a team meeting, followed by individual positional meetings at 6:45 p.m. Starting at 8 p.m., we have a walk-through that lasts until about 9. After we're done with the walk-thru, we have treatments until 10. It's lights-out and curfew at 10:30. The days are pretty busy."

"People are pushing each other out there no matter what the thermometer says. It just doesn't matter...Sideline to sideline, play after play. No matter what, we have to get it done."

Talk about the walk-thrus...
"Walk-thru we typically go over new blitzes that we put in. The offense will put in its new plays and whatever they have going on. We'll go through an offense vs. defense segment just to make sure people have all their individual techniques and know exactly what's coming the next day."
Is camp any more important this year considering the youth on defense and what the defense lost from last year...
"Camp is always important. It really defines your season and what it's going to be like. As for the guys from last year, I love those guys. Those guys are like my brothers. It's still weird not seeing them out on the field with me. But we've moved on and we've got some new guys in that have lots of talent."
The talk around camp has been how fast this defense is. Talk about that...
"Speed really means that we can use that 12th-man on the field - the sidelines. We can push people out further and then, they have no where to run. Speed bring in a lot of factors. People think that the hole in there, then it's not. We've got real fast linebackers and our secondary has a lot of speed. Even our D-line has a lot of talent and speed. A lot of that is unknown right now."
Even with the heat, camp has stayed very intense. What does that mean...
"That's what brings the level of play up. People are pushing each other out there no matter what the thermometer says. It just doesn't matter. It's football. Sideline to sideline, play after play. No matter what, we have to get it done."
Vanderbilt aside, is there a game on the schedule you're looking forward to...
"I still want to take one game at a time. You have to look at the Delaware and JMU games as being very important and we definitely want to win those. But every game is important, so it's hard to look ahead."
You're a senior, going through camp for the fourth time. What is it that you look forward to most when camp starts...
"It's really just the camaraderie we get. It happens both on the practice field and in the free time we get. We'll go hang out with different players. We don't watch much T.V., but we'll play games and do things like that during the couple hours of free time we have a day."
