UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond and the University of Virginia have agreed to play each other in football four times over the next seven years. The Spiders will play at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville next season and again in 2010, 2012 and 2014.
"We are happy about the long-term commitment to play a program that is as prestigious as the University of Virginia," said head coach Dave Clawson. "Both our fans and our team are very excited for the challenge."
The original agreement had the Spiders making the one-hour trip west on Interstate 64 in 2008 and 2010. But the teams signed an extension recently to play twice more through the 2014 campaign.
Richmond has faced Virginia 28 times in the Spiders' 124-year football history. The most recent meeting was Sept. 1, 2001 in Charlottesville, with the Cavaliers winning 17-16.
The Spiders opened last season by beating Duke 13-0 in Durham, N.C. and will pop the cork in 2007 at Vanderbilt on Sept. 1 at 7 p.m. ET. Richmond makes return trips to Duke in 2009 and 2011, with a return trip to Vanderbilt set for 2015.
This season marks the fourth-consecutive year and seventh time in eight seasons the Spiders will play at least one Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) opponent on the gridiron.
