WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Richmond women's soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 1-0 loss to Georgetown (1-0) at the American University Invitational in Washington, D.C. on Friday afternoon.
"It was a pretty good game," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "Kate Hudson had a great game and really kept us in the game in the first half. We had some close chances; Nora (Mann) had a breakaway and we had a few good free kicks, but we just didn't generate a sustained attack."
Georgetown's lone goal came at 62:43 off a throw in play, as sophomore Nora Swanson found teammate Ingrid Wells who lofted the ball over Spider keeper Kate Hudson head.
"Georgetown is a good team," continued Albright. "They are physical, athletic and they play well together. Today's game was challenging from a physical standpoint. I thought we gave them a good game, but they deserved to win. We didn't get a good attack going. We've got to find a way to generate more goals."
The Spiders (0-1) concluded the game facing a 15-7 shot disadvantage and a 1-0 goal disadvantage in their first ever match with Georgetown.
Richmond's Hudson finished the game with eight saves between the pipes, while Jackie DesJardin recorded three saves in goal for the Hoyas.
"Kate (Hudson) was the player of the game," said Albright. "Susan Boyer also played very well, as well as (Nora) Mann, and Ali LeVIne and Kristen Stalter in the back."
The Spiders will resume tournament play on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. with the American Eagles, which season opens with Manhattan on Friday at the American Invitational.
"We are really looking forward to playing again on Sunday and putting one in the win column."
The Eagles return six starters from last year's squad that finished with a 9-7-2 record and a 5th place finish in the Patriot League (3-3-1) and the Spiders currently hold a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series, winning five of the last six meetings.
A radio broadcast, courtesy of American media relations, will be available for Sunday's game. A registration fee applies to access the Eagle Vision All-Access.
