WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Richmond women's soccer team concluded the American University Invitational with a 3-0 loss to American in Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon.
"It was a a remarkable game," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "We played extremely well. We hit the bar twice and missed a penalty kick. We had a couple great chances but we made a few mistakes and ended up losing a game we really could have won."
American notched their first two goals in just over a three-minute span at the close of the first half, with Irene Karistinos knocking in her own corner kick to spark the scoring action at 38:54. Teammate Mary Riegler followed with her first goal of the season off assists from Brooke Sheppard and Margeau Faticone at the 42:01 marker.
The Spiders held off the Eagles for the remainder of the first half and the opening 37 minutes of the second half; however, Krystn Hodge found the back of the net for the second time of the tournament off helpers from Kelsey Brasher and Brooke Sheppard.
The Spiders concluded the game with a 15-12 shot advantage, but were just unable to find the back of the net, and dropped their second game to the Eagles in as many tries.
Richmond's Hudson finished the game with three saves between the pipes, while Hannah Radley and Kelsey Wiggins recorded a total of three saves in goal for the Eagles.
"It was a very exciting game and I was very proud of our players," said Albright. "It was really disappointing to lose, but we took a lot of things from it."
The Spiders (0-2) will resume action next weekend at the JMU/Comfort Inn Invitational where they will face Hofstra on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and James Madison at 1:30 p.m.
