ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The University of Richmond women's cross team finished second and the men fifth at the Navy Salty Dog Invitational, held Saturday morning in Annapolis. Junior Kylee Schuler led the Spiders on the women's side, finishing fourth overall, while sophomore Matt Llano's eighth-place finish paced the men.
Schuler's fourth-place showing was tops among a pack of Spider runners in the top 10. Her time of 22:16 on the 6K United States Naval Academy Cross Country Course was the seventh-fastest in the course's history. Amy Val Alstine took fifth (22:23) and Nicol Traynor (22:40) took sixth.
"We had a good run against some good competition," said women's head coach Lori Taylor. "Louisville just beat us out today, and that's a team that will be among the leaders at the NCAA Regional at the end of the season. But we had good races out of our top three and the goal as we move foward is to get Diana and Alyssa up with the lead pack."
"It was a very good time for Kylee," said Taylor. "This was a tougher course than we have ran in the past."
Also for the Spiders, Diana Filtz took 14th, Alyssa Mankin finished in 25th and Mary Bertram was 30th to round out the Spiders in the top 30.
On the men's side, Llano led the Spiders in the 8K race with a time of 24:42.10. Jonathan Molz was 13th overall, finishing in 24:59.90. Jon Wilson was 25th, followed by Hunter Willis in 27th to round out the Spiders in the top 30.
"The men ran very well," said men's head coach Steve Taylor. "They had a good pack. Matt (Llano) ran 70 second faster than a year ago, Jon (Molz) was 80 seconds and (Jon) Wilson was 2 minutes faster than a year ago."
"We've really developed well," said Taylor. "We've put ourselves in a good position to be competitive down the road. I was proud of the way we competed against a tough field. We finished right behind La Salle, who's been among best in the A-10, and American is third-ranked in the region. We beat George Mason, who is ranked ahead of us in the region."
Louisville won the women's meet, with the Spiders in second, host Navy third, A-10 rival La Salle fourth, and American in fifth to complete the top five of the nine-team meet.
The 15th-ranked Cardinals also won the 11-team men's meet, followed by the host Midshipmen, La Salle, American and Richmond in the top five.
