UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore forward Jen Ruhe scored the game-tying goal as the Richmond women's soccer team played UMBC to a 1-1 double overtime tie in its home opener on Saturday afternoon at First Market Stadium.
"It's a disappointing result," said Richmond Head Coach Peter Albright. "I didn't think we were as composed as we should have been. We had periods of good play, but we didn't put it away. We are trying to establish patterns to help us in the A-10 and I feel like today was a step back for us. Tomorrow we will try to take a step forward."
UMBC (1-4-1) came away with the first goal of the game in the first 13 minutes of play as freshman forward Ashley Singer blasted a shot from over 20 yards out that found the upper left corner, out of Spider keeper Kate Hudson's reach.
The Spiders responded less than 10 minutes later (22:24) as Ruhe collected a pass from fellow sophomore teammate Jessie Knight, took a touch and ripped a shot to the left corner of the net. The goal marked the second of Ruhe's career.
The game remained scoreless through the second half and both overtime periods, giving both teams their first tie of the season. Despite outshooting the Retrievers 12-5 in the second half and 23-10 throughout the entire game, including a break-away by Boyer that was shot just wide of the goal, the Spiders were unable to convert for a game-winner.
"I thought Susan Boyer and Kristen Runey both played strong games and Jen (Ruhe) had a wonderful goal, but we just never got control of the game."
The Spiders (0-4-1) will return to action tomorrow as they host the VMI Keydets at 1:00 pm. at First Market Stadium. This will be Richmond's first-ever contest with VMI, which is 3-2 on the young season and fresh off a 1-0 road loss at Campbell on Wednesday evening. Senior Alexa Bernas leads the Keydets' offense with four goals and three assists, while freshman teammate A.J. Baker also has four goals (and one assist) in her first collegiate season.
Live coverage, including gametracker and video streaming, will be available for tomorrow's game with the Keydets.
