UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomores Kelsey Rdzanek and Jen Ruhe each notched a goal to lead the Richmond women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over VMI, its first win of the season, on Sunday afternoon at First Market Stadium.
"Today was a really good showing for us," stated Richmond Head Coach Peter Albright. "We worked on some specific things we need to get better at - our ball movement and playing patterns were good and we created a lot of good chances."
The Spiders poured the offensive pressure on the Keydets in the first half, with 13 shots on goal while not allowing a single Keydet shot on goal on the other end.
In the second half, Richmond continued pressuring in the attacking end and, after several missed attempts early on, Rdzanek broke the stalemate in the sixth minute as senior Christine Wrublesky delivered a perfect cross from the right sideline to Rdzanek who was able to direct the ball towards the goal with a header. As the ball just missed the net and hit the crossbar, Rdzanek followed her shot and secured the goal with a flick from less than one yard out, notching her first goal of the season and the second of her career.
Spider keeper Kate Hudson, who concluded the game with one save, came up strong in the Keydet's only close chance for a goal less than 13 minutes after the Spiders put their first goal in the back of the net, blocking forward Alexa Bernas' break-away attempt.
The Spiders' second goal of the afternoon came 67:09 into the match as Ruhe beat VMI keeper Heidi Beemer in a one-v-one battle for her second goal of the weekend.
"I give a lot of credit to VMI," said Albright. "They are well coached, well organized and they battled hard." Sunday marked the first ever between the teams.
Richmond ended the match with 31 shots on goal, while limiting the Keydets to just one goal opportunity. VMI's Angela Redmond and Heidi Beemer split time in goal, each recording five saves.
The Spiders (1-4-1) will return to action on Thursday when they head across town to city-rival VCU for a 7:00 p.m. match.
