WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Richmond junior Pamela Duran won the first set of her flight one championship match at the Deacon Classic, but Wake Forest's Sasha Kulikova came back to win the next two and take the title Sunday.
Duran won the first set 6-3, but Kulikova won the next two 6-2, 6-3. Richmond freshman Kelly Tidwell also finished second for the Spiders in the third flight, losing in the final 6-2, 6-1 to Wake Forest's Emilee Malvehy.
"Duran and Tidwell had two nice wins over tough competition in the semifinals," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "They both ran into very good players from Wake Forest in the finals."
"But Duran played some of the best tennis of her career this weekend," said Wesselink. "Her seminfinal match was gorgeous tennis."
Duran and junior Ashlee Vosters placed fifth with a 6-3 win in flight one doubles. Duran and Vosters finished 3-1 in the tournament.
Richmond's Tidwell and junior Xenia Schneider finished seventh out of 15 teams in the flight one doubles.
"The fall season is about individual play in both singles and doubles and getting our younger players some experience," said Wesselink. "I thought we had some very good results this weekend overall."
