MANHATTAN, Kansas - The Richmond men's golf team is in a tie for sixth place with the Air Force Academy after two rounds of the season-opening Jim Colbert Intercollegiate played Monday at Colbert Hills Golf Club.
The 7,525-yard par-72 course was playing tough Monday, especially with strong wind gusts. The Spiders shot a 312 in the opening round and a 307 in the second round to finish the day at 619. Richmond and Air Force are 10 strokes behind fifth-place Akron (609).
"The course is playing hard, the wind was blowing like 30 miles an hour," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "It's a very long course, but we were not at our sharpest today."
Richmond sophomore Hunter Townsend is in a tie for 22nd at 9-over-par 153 after rounds of 76 and 77. Sophomore transfer Robert Lindstrom shot 77s in each round to sit in a tie for 25th at 10-over 154. Senior Jordan Utley rebounded from an opening round 80 to shoot the Spiders' low round of the day, a 3-over 75. Utley is in a tie for 30th at 155.
Junior Tim Courtney and senior Billy Hanes are tied for 38th at 159. Courtney shot an 81 in the morning round and a 78 in the afternoon. Hanes had a 79 in the first round and an 80 in the second round.
"We struggled in all the wind," Decker said. "We just have got to come back tomorrow and hit more greens. We were struggling to get up and down in some really tough conditions. We just have to regroup and come back strong tomorrow."
The third and final round of the Colbert Intercollegiate begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
