Half way through the Spiders 2007-08 schedule, Richmond welcomes their first Atlantic 10 opponent La Salle to the Robins Center for a Saturday matinee January 12 at 2 p.m. ET. Heading into Saturday's game, freshman Johanna McKnight is up there with Shells scoring on average 12.8 ppg. Saturday's game is a part of the A-10's Attendance Challenge. The institution which averages the highest attendance totals for its home Conference games will be declared the league's first-ever Challenge winner.
Richmond (7-8) is looking for their first win in over two weeks as they host their first A-10 competitor, La Salle (8-7). The Spiders fell to Liberty their last time on the court, 45-38. Shooting only 25% from the floor, Richmond played solid defense holding the Flames to only three field goals in the second half. Freshman Brittani Shells led the Spiders in the loss with 20 points. The freshman now paces Richmond averaging 13.7 ppg.
This will also be the first A-10 conference competition for the Explorers. La Salle improved to 8-7 with an early week win (1/7) over Penn, 56-37. Carlene Hightower led the Explorers in the win with 17 points. Hightower leads La Salle averaging 17.8 points per game in their first 15 games of the 2007-08 season.
Richmond leads the all-time series with A-10 opponent La Salle, 8-6. The two teams met for the first time in 1987, and every year since Richmond joined the conference in 2001. Most recently in January of 2007, the Spiders dominated the Explorers, 70-48. In the win, now-sophomore Danielle Bell helped lead the way with acareer-high 16 points.
Up Next: The Spiders continue conference play on the road; first up heading to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Xavier January 16 at 7 p.m. ET. A few days later, Richmond gets back on the road, this time up to Amherst, Mass. where they will see UMass January 20 for a 2 p.m. ET game.
