Spiders Fall At Xavier, 66-57

CINCINNATI, Ohio. - Richmond was handed their first A-10 loss of the season at Xavier, 66-57. Freshman Johanna McKnight followed closely 15. McKnight also led the team under the basket pulling down seven rebounds. Xavier's Jerri Taylor led the Musketeers with 17 points in their first A-10 win.
Brittani Shells shot 50% from the floor and behind the arc to earn her 16 points as Richmond fell to Xavier. The freshman contributed on the defensive end as well, earning three steals. Both McKnight and sophomore Kara Powell stole the ball from Xavier four times. The Spiders forced 12 of Xavier's 21 turnovers. Powell shot perfect from the free-throw line, scoring all four of her points.
The Spiders came back from 12 point deficit with just six minutes to go to cut the lead to six with under a minute left in regulation. Fouling efforts by Richmond led to Xavier free-throws that ultimately gave the Musketeers the win.
Xavier's size showed in the rebound column as the Musketeers pulled down 38 boards to our 26. Freshman, Ta'Shia Phillips was the only player of the game to record a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Xavier shot 47.7% from the floor while the Spiders shot just under 40%.
Richmond will continue play on the road as they head to UMass this weekend. The Spiders face off against the Minutewomen Sunday, January 20 at 2 p.m. ET.
