CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Richmond field hockey team lost to No. 10 ranked Virginia 7-1 on Wednesday.
Five of Richmond's seven losses this season have come against ranked opponents. The Spiders (3-7) had defeated No. 14 ranked American 2-1 last Friday, but have not faired as well against a pair of Top-10 teams from the ACC in the past five days.
The Spiders fell behind 3-0 at the half and trailed 4-0 before junior Sarah Blythe-Wood scored her third goal of the season and the 10th of her career. Sophomore Hannah Hess had her first assist of the season on the goal.
"We didn't show up against a very good Virginia team," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "They got some momentum from great corner play and continued to stretch their lead in the second half. What doesn't hurt us will make us stronger. We will become fighters."
Junior Jacki Raithel made nine save in goal for Richmond, which plays its third-straight game against an ACC team ranked in the Top-10 when the Spiders travel to No. 3 ranked Wake Forest on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday's match-up with Wake will be the seventh time in the last nine games that Richmond will have faced a ranked opponent.
