CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Richmond freshman Brad Miller won the Frank Landry Invitational on Tuesday, carding a 3-under 69 in the final round to finish the 54-hole tournament at 6-under-par 210 and win by three shots.
Miller opened the tournament with a 2-under 70 Monday, then finished the second round Tuesday morning with a 1-under 71 on the par-72, 7,186-yard course. The Timonium, Md. native was tied for the lead entering the final round of his first collegiate tournament and with a chance at medalist honors within his grasp, Miller carded a 3-under 69 to win by three strokes.
"Obviously I'm thrilled for Brad, what a way to start your college career," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He composed himself very well knowing that he was close to the lead and that there were other players in contention well. We look forward to him continuing his good play."
Miller's 6-under-par 210 ties the school record for lowest three-round total to par. This is the fourth time a Spider has earned medalist honors during Decker's four years at Richmond. Decker has also led the Spiders to a pair of team titles and a spot in the 2005 NCAA Regional Championships.
Miller, who did not qualify for the Spiders starting five, was playing as an individual so his score did not count toward Richmond's team total. Senior Lawrence Lessing, who was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week after the Spiders' season-opening tournament, also did not come out of qualifying with a spot in the lineup. The Spiders finished fifth in the 14-team field at 888 after rounds of 290, 303 and 295.
Richmond's lineup was led by a seventh-place finish by senior Tim Courtney, who finished at 1-over- 215. Courtney shot a 2-under 70 in the first round, a 1-over 73 in the second and even-par 72 in the third.
Junior Robert Lindstrom finished in a tie for 21st at 223 (71-76-76), while sophomore Michael Shrader and junior Grant Rafield tied for 29th at 225. Shrader shot 76-77-73 and Rafield was 73-78-74. Sophomore Sam Beach tied for 72nd at 239 (80-83-76).
Richmond had three individuals competing in the tournament, including Miller. Senior David Feeley tied for 50th at 229 (77-77-75) and Lessing tied for 57th at 231 (78-80-73).
The Spiders return to action on Monday at the Georgetown Hoya Invitational.
