UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
The University of Richmond field hockey team won another overtime thriller at Crenshaw Field, beating Saint Joseph's 2-1 on the strength of two clutch goals by junior Megan Thompson.
"I'm absolutely thrilled," said head coach Gina Lucido. "This was an absolute team effort today."
Saint Joseph's led for much of the game after Junior Kellie Walter found the back of the net with just over seven minutes elapsed in the game for her tenth goal of the season.
The Spiders kept the pressure on Saint Joseph's goalkeeper, totaling 29 shots to just seven by the Hawks.
With just 3:04 left in the game, Thompson buried a shot on an assist by sophomore Hannah Hess to tie the game at one goal apiece and sent the contest in overtime.
Richmond controlled possession for much of the overtime period. Freshman Katelin Peterson took a shot that saved and deflected out in front of the goal. Thompson was there to put away the game-winner for the second time in three days.
The Spiders edged Virginia Commonwealth University in overtime on Wednesday and it was Thompson who scored the goal to send the game into the extra period and then eventually won it.
"This is huge for our program," Lucido said. "We had to earn everything as a team that happened today. I'm so proud of this team and the way they've come together." Richmond plays at home again on Sunday at noon, facing Atlantic 10 foe Temple University.
