Richmond won its 40th all-time game on Homecoming, improving its HC record to 40-32-6. The Spiders have won two straight on Homecoming, three of four, seven of nine and 10 of 14.
The 48-points and 48-point margin of victory both stand as Homecoming records for the Spiders, while the shutout was the first on HC since the 2002 season (26-0 vs. James Madison) and the 14th all-time. Richmond's previous record for points on Homecoming was 45 (three times) and the previous record for margin of victory was 42 in a 45-3 win over VMI in 1986.
The shutout was Richmond's first since blanking Stony Brook, 42-0, last season. The margin of victory was the largest since beating VMI, 58-7, in 2006.
Richmond amassed 22 first downs (tied season high), compared to four by Georgetown. The Hoyas didn't move the chains until the 4:43 mark of the third quarter. It marked just the third time in Richmond history (second time this season) that an opponent has not recorded a passing first down -- 21-9 loss at Virginia Tech on Sept. 27, 1975 and the 56-16 win at VMI this year.
The four total first downs by Georgetown was just one shy of the Richmond defensive record of holding Furman to three total first downs in a 37-0 win on Nov. 8, 1969.
The 88 total yards of offense by Georgetown came seven yards shy of the Richmond defensive record of 81 total yards by William & Mary during a 6-6 tie on Nov. 24, 1955.
Senior TB Josh Vaughan continued his march up the Richmond all-time rushing charts and with 407 yards in his last three games, he has vaulted from not ranked in the Spiders' all-time top-10 to fifth currently. With his career-high 157 versus Georgetown, Vaughan has 2,378 for his career and surpassed Eric Hopkins (2,318) in fifth.
Vaughan's last four games have seen him rush for 530 yards and eight TDs (he had 353 yards and three TDs in the first five games). Vaughan is just 117 yards shy of his first career 1,000-yard rushing season.
Junior QB Eric Ward completed his first five passes of the game for 95 yards and finished seven-of-12 for 117 yards. But with an interception on his 10th pass attempt of the game, it snapped his streak of six games and 141 consecutive pass attempts without being picked off.
With 117 yards passing, Ward now has 5,401 in his career and moved past Stacy Tutt (who was in attendance on Homecoming) for third all-time at Richmond. The junior needs 1,302 more yards to catch Greg Lilly (6,703 yards) in second.
The game saw freshman TB Shawn White each score their first career touchdowns.
Due to an undisclosed team issue, junior K Andrew Howard did not play in the first half. Senior back-up QB Will Healy handled the extra-point duties and was a perfect three-for-three (first three of his career), while junior P Brian Radford was one-for-two on field goal attempts, hitting from 25 yards but missing from 41 (first tries of his career).
Howard returned for the second half and made good on the three PATs and a 26-yard field goal. That FG moved him into sole possession of second all-time at Richmond in made FGs with 34. He needs seven more for the all-time record of 41 held by Rob Courter.
Radford had had a career day punting, averaging 46.5 yards on his two kicks. It surpassed his previous career-best average of 45.2 yards at Vanderbilt last season. His second punt of the day was 50 yards (longest of the season).
Richmond's average drive start was its own 49 to mark its best starting field position of the season after the starting at its own 48 last week at Massachusetts.
The Spiders forced four turnovers in the game and scored off each ensuing possession (three TDs). For the season, Richmond has forced 20 turnovers, generated 84 points off the takeaways and been held scoreless just five times following turnovers.
Since 2005, Richmond improved to 25-2 (5-1 this season) when scoring 30 or more points and 25-6 when scoring first. The win also improved Richmond to 32-3 (6-1 this season) when leading at the half since 2004.
Richmond entered the game ranked No. 9 and improved to 46-27 when playing as a Sports Network ranked team since 1993 (15-5 since 2007).
